Teeth Whitening During Pregnancy or Breastfeeding: What You Need to Know

At Stunning Smiles, we’re all about helping you feel confident in your smile — safely. If you’re expecting or currently breastfeeding, you might be wondering whether now is the right time to book in for a teeth whitening session. It’s a great question — and one we get asked often.

While we know how much a bright smile can boost confidence (especially during a time when you may not be feeling your absolute best), we always prioritise your health and safety first.

Is Teeth Whitening Safe During Pregnancy?

Currently, there’s limited research on the safety of professional teeth whitening products during pregnancy. Most whitening gels contain hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, which work by penetrating the outer enamel to lift deep stains.

While these ingredients are considered safe in low concentrations for general use, there isn’t enough solid evidence to confirm whether they are 100% safe for your baby during pregnancy. For this reason, many dental professionals — including us — recommend waiting until after pregnancy to whiten.

It’s all about reducing unnecessary exposure to chemicals during such a sensitive time.

What About While Breastfeeding?

The same caution applies while breastfeeding. Although absorption through the gums is minimal, we still advise avoiding whitening treatments until breastfeeding has finished. This is because it’s hard to predict how small amounts of whitening agents might transfer into breast milk — and again, safety always comes first.

What Can You Do In the Meantime?

Just because you’re not whitening right now doesn’t mean you can’t take steps to maintain or improve your smile:

Switch to a whitening toothpaste approved for daily use
Use a soft-bristled electric toothbrush for more effective plaque removal
Limit heavily pigmented foods and drinks (like coffee, red wine, and berries)
✅ Stay hydrated and rinse with water after meals or drinks
✅ Book in for a professional clean with your dentist or Oral Health Therapist

And when the time comes, we’ll be ready to safely guide you through your teeth whitening journey!

When Can I Book Whitening Again?

Once you’ve finished breastfeeding and feel ready for a little self-care, we’d love to help you achieve a fresher, whiter smile. Many mums tell us they book a whitening session as a postpartum confidence boost — and we’re here for it!
